Tropical Depression 4E strengthened overnight and is now Tropical Storm Ela, but forecasters say it poses no threat to the islands.
According to the National Weather Service, at 5 a.m. the storm was about 585 miles east of Hilo with maximum sustained winds of 40 miles an hour, moving northeast at 13 miles an hour.
The storm’s projected path should take it north of the islands, but there still could be some muggy conditions with locally heavy showers, forecasters said.
